Crusher vs Grinder: Which Is Right for You?

Crushers and grinders both reduce plastic, but they work differently and suit different stages of recycling. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right machine for your line.

What a crusher does

A plastic crusher uses a rotating blade rotor against fixed knives to cut materials into flakes. It is the standard first step for bottles, rigid containers, sheet and injection scrap, producing a uniform flake size for washing or granulating.

What a grinder does

A grinder (or granulator) also cuts plastic, but is often used for finer or continuous in-plant recycling — returning sprues, runners and edge trim to production quickly. Choosing between them depends on throughput, material and whether you need washing downstream.

Which should you choose?

For bottles, rigid containers and contaminated streams that need washing afterward, start with a crusher. For clean in-plant scrap returned directly to molding or extrusion, a granulator is usually the better fit.
